Find a dentist you are comfortable with
There is a barrier when patients want to try a new dental office. Most offices charge a new patient exam fee, which can be as much as $300. So what happens if, after you have your initial evaluation at a new office, there’s something you really don’t like? You can try another office nearby, but you might have to pay the new patient exam fee again.
That’s why it is so important to ask friends, family and co-workers about their dentists. If you hear an enthusiastic recommendation about a dentist, you’ll likely be happy with that dentist as well.
What a routine exam is actually checking
A routine exam involves checking the teeth and gums, of course. But it also requires screening for oral cancer. So when I ask you to stick out your tongue and grab it with a piece of gauze, I’m not trying to pull it out of your head — even if it feels like that. The reality is that most oral cancers occur at the base of the tongue, so this is an essential part of our routine exam.
